Tamil is a language spoken in Tamil Nadu, India, as well as in several other countries, including Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. The objective of our school is to help children of Tamil immigrants living in Atlanta develop proficiency in the language through systematic learning. This, in turn, will give them a glimpse into the rich culture and history of Tamil Nadu.
Teaching Tamil in the US presents unique challenges, as the primary medium of instruction here is English. To address this, our teaching methodology starts with the basics and gradually introduces more advanced concepts over time.
We primarily follow the Singapore curriculum for grades 1 through 10, supplemented with custom-made materials for beginner-level students. Additionally, we incorporate lessons, stories, and exercises from resources like Tamil Virtual University, Tamil Nadu Government textbooks, and other educational materials available online.
Our lessons focus on developing students’ skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. We assign periodic speech and essay topics to help students gain fluency and confidence in the language. We also integrate computer-based learning into our classes, a feature that has been well-received by both parents and students.
The academic year consists of 32 classes, divided into two semesters. Classes are held on weekends, with each session lasting approximately 75 minutes. Students are assessed through weekly quizzes, midterm tests, and semester exams. The beginner level typically takes two years to complete, while other grades may take about one and a half years. An average score of 70% is required for students to progress to the next grade level.
A notable feature of our school is that we conduct reading and speech competitions for all classes to enhance learning and public speaking. In addition, we give opportunities to students to exhibit their talents through cultural programs and poster presentations during our annual day.
Parents, let your children join our school and learn our mother tongue!
