The Lakshmi Tamil Learning Center was founded in 1987 by Lakshmi Shankar in Norcross, a suburb of Atlanta, with the mission of providing free Tamil education to the children of Tamil-speaking immigrant families.

The school’s primary goal is to teach children, starting as young as five, to speak, read, and write in Tamil. Emphasis is placed on spoken                  communication to help students connect with Tamil-speaking family members and the wider community.

Initially, classes were held at Lakshmi’s home for several years. In 2010, thanks to the generosity of the pastor and elders, the school moved to the premises of the Atlanta Tamil Church in Norcross.

Over the years, enrollment has steadily increased, along with the teaching staff. Today, the center has 29 dedicated teachers serving a student body of more than 300 children, from beginner levels through 10th grade.

After the pandemic, the school has transitioned to a virtual format, serving students across the globe, including those in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Denmark, the UK, Luxembourg, the UAE, the Netherlands, and Azerbaijan.
